Chapter 5

Chapter 5

We were peacefully eating or somewhat with Christy there, when someone crashed through the window. I jumped onto my chair on instinct and so did Christy. I jumped onto the table and dashed over to the body. It was a guy, and he looked about my age. I rotated his head so I could see his face. He had shaggy black hair, he had a lot of scars, too, but he seemed fit for anything. I put his head in my lap and started to murmur something I didn’t know. Before I knew it, my left hand was covered in a blue fire. And as I put it on his heart, his wounds started to heal. “Be careful, Phire. He is a Hunter, a Panther Hunter. He is very fast and deadly.” Christy commented as she came by my side.
“Since when did you start to be so nice to me and warn me?” I asked. I looked over at her and she sighed, apparently not enjoying this.
“Your mother kidnapped me and told me I needed to protect you, your sister, and your friends.” She answered. I nodded, finally understanding. I heard groaning and looked down. There was the guy staring straight into my eyes. And may I say he had the most beautiful dark indigo eyes I’d ever seen. He blinked a few times trying to figure out what happened probably.
“W-where am I?” he asked.
“You’re in a restraint. You took a nasty blow, coming through the window and all.” I answered.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Sapphire, but you can call me Phire. And may I ask who you are?”
“Kyle. I-I think I was fighting someone when I was forced through this window.” He glanced around the restraint, and spotted Christy. He narrowed his eyes, and his voice turned into a snarl, “What are you doing here, reject? I thought they took away your bunny DNA! But apparently you managed to escape. You know that you were taken off the duty of killing experiment 56623. So what are you doing here?”
“My business is nothing of your concern, Hunter. Shouldn’t you be hunting your assignment? And I thought you were better than letting you prey blow you into a civilian restraint,” she snapped back.
“How dare you talk about top secret information from the Place, especially in front of a kind-hearted, fragile civilian like Ms. Phire?”
“Fragile? Ha! Civilian? Double Ha! Oh please, this is experiment 56623, you idiot.” Kyle stared at me and I started to get nervous. I looked at my table and everyone nodded.
I looked down at Kyle and smiled, “It was nice meeting you, but…BYE!” I scrambled up and jumped out the window. I rolled on the pavement twice and broke out into a run. Everyone trailing not far behind. Jade, Opal, and Mo caught up and smiled at me. I sighed and ran around a corner, immediately running into someone.
“Ow!” We both screamed. Breathlessly, Zeke and my Dad loomed over me and the person next to me. I was still on the cold, hard alley floor when I glanced at the person I ran into. She was unconscious and her arm was nauseatingly bleeding. She had glossy, short, tangled, greasy, messed up, blond hair, and cheerful light blue eyes. Her face was smothered in shock, but she was still unconscious. “Vella, I told you to...What happened?!? What did you do to my sister?!” Another girl cried. She looked almost exactly like um…Vella. The girl ran over with unnatural speed and knelt by Vella. “What did you do to my sister!?” she cried, again.
“I-I didn’t do anything. I ran into her-“ I tried to explain, but she interrupted me.
“Liar!!” she screamed. Her dark gray eyes locked onto my golden eyes. Suddenly, her strawberry blonde hair whipped back, as if being blown by a harsh wind. She lifted her hands, me being picked up by the wind. The girl then swung her arms toward the wall, and I got smashed to it. I crumpled to the floor nest to Vella, unconscious. “You don’t mess with Odessa,” she hissed.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

I turned around to see everyone gaping at me. “Alright, alright. No one has to gape at me. Plus, Jade is the one whose hands went through the seat! Anyway, Dad please tell us what is going on. We could use the information.” I said. My Dad sighed and ran his hand through his shaggy black hair.
“Sweetheart, I’ll tell you when we are safe, but right now we need to get somewhere else. They are still after us.” My Dad replied.
“That’s just it. Who are they? Dad, no one understands what is going on, so please tell us.” I retorted.
My Dad just crossed his arms and sternly scolded me, “Sapphire Marie Coalman, you will do as you are told.” I then straitened up and nodded. So did everyone else. “Good. Now, we will go somewhere safe and I will tell you what I know. Alright, young lady?” Again, I nodded. “Great, now follow me.” Involuntarily, we marched right behind him.
*********
“Fine, now we are in this tree house. Now, start talking Dad.” I grumbled, adjusting my sitting position. This place was so fancy shmancy. I don’t know if the six of us really fitted in.
My Dad sighed, looking 20 years older than he is. He ran his fingers through his dark brown hair, and closed his green eyes. “Alright, I will tell you. You and your friends are called Forgottens. It means that you were marked off as people who had their minds erased. Sapphire you can create and control fire. That’s why you are called a Sun. As for Jade, she is called a Ghost. Meaning, that she can go through stuff when she wants to, of course.”
“But, I didn’t want to go through the seat belt. And-“Jade commented. But my Dad raised his hand, and silenced her.
“I know, but that was a misfire. You know, because you aren’t properly trained. You weren’t even supposed to be alive long enough to be able to fully get your powers. The Hunters were supposed to eliminate you all by now. Christy, for example. She is a Hunter. That’s why she never tried to get along with you. She really is a nice girl. There must’ve been something you have been doing to keep her from terminating you.-“ My Dad explained, of course until someone jumped through a tree house window. Of course, it was Christy who jumped through the window.
“Hey, Dad? What are Hunters exactly?” I stuttered. I glanced at him and he was perfectly normal looking. In other words, he wasn’t frightened.
“Christy, you just LOVE ruining moments. Don’t you?” My Dad sighed. Christy smirked and put away her…claws? Ok, I know they call them cat fights when two girls fight, but this is ridiculous. “Now, please sit down. I still need to explain what Hunters are to them.”
Christy straightened herself and hissed, and I mean latterly hissed, “You can’t make me, old man.”
“We both know that I can make you,” my Dad sternly said. He glanced at her and ordered, “Now sit down, Christina Purr Mawl.” Christy sat down reluctantly. I stifled a laugh, but Christy must’ve heard and glared at me. But she stayed put. “Great, now Hunters are usually teens who get animal DNA mixed into them. Like Christy, for example, she got a bunny’s DNA mixed in her genes. Others, might have dog, horse, bird, those are interesting cause you turn into a bird, guinea pig, pig, etc., etc. So, you see? You all are part of a game. Sort of like a cat and mouse.” My eyebrows furrowed and rose.
“Wow, Dad, you’ve really gone crazy.” I laughed. I stood up, but I immediately sat back down. “Hey, Dad? Do you have a power?” I asked.
My Dad smiled and nodded, “All you have to do is guess what it is.”
I smirked at him. “Persuasion.” I guessed. My Dad’s eyes widened and he nodded. Everyone else stared at me. “What? He is persuasive.”

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

How did they find us?!? Odessa thought. They’re always finding us… “Come on! We can do this, Vella!” Odessa yelled. She outstretched her hand and a trashcan lifted into the air. She flicked her wrist and the trashcan flung itself toward a Hunter. Vella sucked in, and then blew out a HUGE gust of air. Blowing 2 Hunters away.
“Surrender and nobody gets hurt.” A hunter ordered. Odessa laughed, and she put her game face on.
Wait, they’re usually harder to beat...Odessa thought.
“I was going easy on you.” She growled. Then she closed her eyes and when she opened them they were grey…seeming more powerful and confident. She raised both of her hands and the rest of the hunters lifted up. Then, Vella blew them away, but one grabbed Vella’s arm and ripped a big gash in it. V screamed and fell to the ground.  Blood oozing and spreading everywhere. Making a huge, dangerous mess. “Vella!” Odessa yelled. She kneeled by V’s side and touched the gash. They both winced and Odessa looked at the gash on her own arm. They are ‘close’ twins. Whatever happens to one happens to the other. The Hunters dropped to the ground, and started to surround them again. Odessa wrapped her wound and got into a fighting stance.
Can I really take them all by myself? Odessa screamed inside her head.
One of the Hunters drew a sword and grinned a mouthful of beautiful, white teeth “Remember me, toots? Please say that you do.” He laughed. Odessa’s eyebrows furrowed as she went into deep thought. The dude took the chance and pounced onto Odessa. He sat on top off her smirking at her expense. Her eyes bulged as the air was forced out of her lungs. She tried to gasp but it felt like her lungs were collapsing inward. “It makes me sooo sad that you don’t remember me. I mean we were at the Place together.” He snarled. Odessa struggled and her eyes went as wide as saucers.
“Kyle? How did you turn into a Hunter? We were best friends. Until, you know, I escaped. You helped me escape. But you got caught didn’t you? And they turned you into a Hunter? It’s not my fault you know that right?” Odessa whispered.
“It is your fault. If you hadn’t escaped, we could be powerful Hunters together.” Kyle snarled. Together? Odessa thought. Before he realized it, Vella slammed into Kyle. Making him fly across the alley and hit the wall with a Crack. Kyle laid there, limp and lifeless.
“We need to leave, like now. We can’t afford being caught, especially in this state.” Vella gasped. Odessa nodded, grimaced, and stood up with V.
“Which way are we going to go? I mean, we need to get them off our trail…So how ‘bout we head towards West, instead of North. You know so they get confused.” Odessa commented. Vella thought for a moment, and then nodded in agreement.
*********
“Ugh, I’m too tired to move a muscle.” V complained.
Stop talking and your lip muscles won’t hurt, Odessa snapped her head.
“I’m done I can’t do this,” Vella collapsed and curled up into a ball on the forest floor. “And you can’t make me move.”
Odessa sighed and stuck her tongue out at V. “I guess we can make camp here. We just have to be careful,” she grumbled. Odessa sat down and started making a fire. She poked it repeatedly until it came to life. The fire danced into the air. Setting shadows across the clearing. Odessa looked into the fire. The flames alternated from yellow, to orange, to red, making beautiful artwork from nature. She looked out into the forest looking at all the crooked branches and leafs blowing in the breeze. Odessa then glanced at Vella, her sleeping sister blowing the night away. It all seemed too familiar. The fire, the wind blowing, it seemed the two were fighting. Or they’re trying to work together… Ow, ow, OW!
Why can’t I remember our past? Odessa thought. Then, she just blacked out, over-working her mind.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

They've been walking for days, but they can't go back. No matter how many alleys we have to live in, we will never surrender to themOdessa thought. She looked over at her fraternal twin sister and sighed. Why do they have to go after us? We're just 12 year old kids, she wondered. "Let's rest, Vella. You look exhausted." Odessa sweetly said.
Odessa looked at V's ratted purple sweater, and ripped jeans. Her shoes were caked in mud and her glossy, short, blond hair was now tangled, greasy, and messed up. The only thing that was the same was her cheerful, light blue eyes were still filled with hope. "Alright, Odessa. Wait, you have a leaf in your hair." Vella replied. She reached out and gently took the leaf out of Odessa's knee long, shiny (from the grease), strawberry blonde hair. Odessa smiled at Vella, her gray eyes shining with new hope, but then she glazed over. Suddenly, for no reason, she started crying. "Oh, no. Did you have another vision?" Vella worried.
Odessa nodded and collapsed, "A bunch of kids. One was on fire, one kept on trying to touch things only to go through them, one was pushing things away with a force, another one repeatedly turned invisible throwing darts everywhere, one shaped shifted into multiple forms, and one was continuously changing into a fire and leaping on battle dummies. It looked like they were training for something. But the worst thing was the end. It showed us standing there, looking at the kids bodies..." she cried.
Vella stared at Odessa and gathered her into a hug. "It'll be ok. Remember, we can change the future. What you saw is what the future is for now. So we can still change it." Vella whispered. Odessa wiped her tears away and smiled.
"Alright. So you want me to speed over to the store and buy some food with the money we have left?" Vella suggested.
"Sure, fine. I'll just make a camp here." Odessa muttered, still wiping tears away.
"See you in 1 minute, exactly. Oh, and your nose is turning red..." Vella commented, and then she was off in a flash, literally.
I'm alone, Odessa thought. I still, no matter probably what, think that vision is going to come true. Odessa sighed and lay down on the grungy ground. I so need a bath I mean, I STINK, she thought.
"I'm back. I got you a Honey-Bun, soap, Dr. Pepper, and a traveler’s toothbrush," Vella said.
Odessa licked her lips and dug in. "At least I get to brush my teeth afterwards," she laughed.
"Well, at least we'll fill up before we..." Vella trailed off, looking frightened. Odessa looked over her shoulders, and there they were. The Hunters.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

When we passed Ash, I grabbed the plate she was holding and laughed, "Thanks, Hun. Now hurry up, you don't want to make us late." I jumped off the last step, as Ash started to roll her eyes. "Bye Mom! I love ya!" I yelled when I reached the back door.
"Hold on! Give me a hug before you leave!" My Mom yelled back. It was my turn to roll my eyes now as my Mom walked into the kitchen. My mom is a tall, tan woman with curly, brown hair. My sister got the hair, and I got the tallness and taness. Anyways, she walked into the kitchen and was wearing a green dress, black high heels, and a black shawl. So, I hugged her, Ash on the other side. "I love you girls so much," my Mom whispered, and then she murmured something surprising, "I may never see you guys again."
"Don't say that mom; we'll see you after school. It's not like we're going to be kidnapped, you know us better than that." I cried, tears welling in my eyes. I only have tears in my eyes is because she's saying this crazy thing of me never seeing her again.
"Just go, you don't want to be late." my Mom sniffled. I nodded, and put my hands on
Ash's shoulders. I steered her towards the door, and as we walked out the door, I took one last look at my Mom. I keep thinking, no matter how much I don't want to, that I'm not going to see her for awhile.
We walked to the car and I saw that Zeke, Mo, Jade, and Opal were already settled into my midnight blue convertible. "Looks like you guys made yourself comfortable." I sighed.
"Well, I don't want to run into Christy, for one. And I don't want to be late," Zeke commented. Christy is the dumbest, meanest, most awful person in the world. She has wavy true blond hair and dark, cruel, sinister grey eyes. She is always wearing pink and to tight short shorts.
"Well that's true." I agreed, as I jumped into the driver's seat. Then, we were off to school.
We arrived and I saw an area near the school, in the parking lot, that barely had any cars in it. So, I gently pulled in and turned off the engine. "Look who's here, girls. Sapphire and her freak show. Except for you, Zeke. You can come and hang out with the cool girls." Christy sneered. She's been after Zeke for 5 years, now. She is so pathetic.
"Where are they? Cause you certainly aren't them. So, why don't you fall down a hole? You'll be doing everyone a favor." I hissed, because no one hits on my boyfriend and calls me Sapphire. I jumped out of my car, and walked right up to Christy.
She snapped right then and there. She slapped me across the face HARD. Causing me to fall down. "You are pathetic. That's why your father is always traveling. You disappoint him," she snarled.
I just got up, wiped away my tears, and spat in her face, "Like I care what you think." I then dropped down and kicked Christy's feet out of under her. "How did I just do that?" I asked. Someone would've answered, if Christy hadn't started screaming for the police outside the school for help. I looked at Jade and we nodded together. I jumped into the driver seat and sped to the intersection. I made a hard right and, standing there, was my Dad. I hit the brakes, then stared, cause we were on a highway with no one else. I glared at my Father, and if looks could kill, he would be in a coffin right now. Right when I glared even harder, the engine burst into flames.
Everyone screamed and jumped out of the car, everyone except Jade. "Jade how did that happen?!? Just, never mind! Get out of the car! It looks like it's about to blow up!" I yelled.
"I'm trying! My seat belt won't come undone!" She screeched. Jade looked down and her eyes grew wide. "My hands are going through the seat!" I rolled my eyes and charged toward the exploding car. Somehow, I knew I wouldn't get hurt.
I ran up to Jade and she was telling the truth. Her hands are going right through the buckle. I quickly unbuckled her and we dashed away as the whole car exploded. "That was close," I laughed, and then I started laughing harder as I saw the burnt Jade. "Ok, now what are we going t-AH!" I screamed, grabbing my head. When I managed to slightly open my eyes, I saw everyone else grabbing their heads, too. All I could hear was screaming and a high pitched ringing noise. Ah, I can't take it anymore! I shut my eyes and saw an orange glow. Finally, FINALLY, the piercing noise stopped, but the screaming just got worse. My eyes flashed open to see there was a fire at where I was laying! I looked at my skin, and it looks like I got a really bad sunburn, but it doesn't hurt. I saw my hands and they were on fire. Also, my hair was red and on fire.
"Get some water and throw it on her! Phire stop, drop, and roll. Do it now!" Zeke yelled. He is obviously worried.
"Wait! If you throw that water on me, Opal. I will kill you." I hissed. Opal took a step back and threw the water on me, anyway. But the fire didn't go out. It just got bigger as I got angrier.
"What's happening to us? OMG! Phire your eyes! They're red and they are flicking orange like a fire!" Jade gasped. Tears tried to run down my cheeks, but they just evaporated by the time they touched my skin.
"I know how to teach you to control it. But you guys have to trust me," my Dad stated.
"Fine." I grumbled.
My Dad smiled. "First, you have to know what you are. The people call your kind Suns, Sapphire. Second, you need to close your eyes," my Dad ordered. I squeezed my eyes shut, no matter how much I wanted to snap at him. "Lastly, take deep breaths, and calm down." I followed his orders again. And when I opened my eyes, I was back to normal. Or somewhat.

Prologue

Prologue

I'm running. I don't know why, but I'm running away from something. No matter how tired I am, I can't stop. I didn't expect anything like this to happen. I doubt anyone would expect this. I grabbed a tree and tried to stop, but suddenly, something grabbed my arm and started shaking me.
I bolted awake, and hit my head on my ceiling. I rubbed it and looked down. "Finally, you’re awake. Mom has been trying to get you up for the past hour. If you don't hurry up, we're going to be late for school!" My little sister, Ash, yelled at me. She's 12 years old and still a cutie. Her green eyes shine at me (even when we fight). She has curly, dark brown hair, with light brown highlights. Her bangs were clipped back with a hair pin. She was wearing a pink blouse, light blue skinny jeans, and pink converse.
I smiled at her. My name is Sapphire, but everyone calls me Phire. I'm 16 years old, and I live with my Mom and little sister. I don't count my Dad, cause he's always out on business trips. Right now I think he's in India. I don't know my Dad does, though. He's always has a white coat on, so I assume he's a traveling Doctor. But the strange thing is that my Mom told me that she wants him away (and they aren’t divorced). She wants him away from me and my friends. Every time I ask her why she will just say, when the time is right. Then, I would ask her, when is that? And her response is, when everything changes. When is that? I mean, does she mean she'll tell me when I get higher than a D in school? Or if I stop dyeing the tips of my hair dark red. Or will she tell me when Dad stops traveling.
Anyways, I have gold eyes and straight, black hair with settle red highlights. It falls to right above my butt. My bangs sweep across my eyes and I dyed the tips really dark red.
So, I pulled off my covers and hung my skinny, tan legs over the side. "Thanks, Ash. How 'bout you grab my breakfast, from down stairs, and bring it in here real quick, while I get dressed." I yawned, while rubbing sleep out of my eyes.
"Ok, but when I come back you better be dressed," she warned. I pretended to be frightened, and jumped down from my bunk-bed. Ash rushed down stairs, while I walked over to my closet.
We're not rich, and we also aren't poor, but we act like we're rich. I mean I have an attic room! The stairs just come right into my room! Also, Ash and I go to a private school! Awesome, right?!
Anyways, I opened my closet and walked in. I picked out my black tights and black plaid shorts. Then I found my loose, white T-shirt with an owl on it and put it on after I threw on a bra. I found my white converse and threw them on, while I hopped over to my desk. "Sapphire! Zeke, Jade, Monica, sorry, Mo, and Opal are here!" My mom yelled.
"Cool! Send them up!" I yelled back. I've been friends with them since...um..."Ow." I muttered. Everytime I try to remember further than the past month, I get these massive headaches. Anyways, I shoved my stuff into my backpack, as Zeke, Mo, Opal, and Jade walked up. "Hey guys, can one of you make my bed? I'd appreciate it." I asked, while zipping my backpack up.
"I will. Why are you always waking up late? I'm surprised you can get us to school." Jade laughed. Jade has dark, navy blue hair with darker blue highlight. It comes just a little below her shoulders. Her bangs coming half across her face, and she has purple eyes. She was wearing a black tank, with a black and white plaid jacket/tee thing. She had black jeggings and grey boots on, too. She climbed up my ladder and started making my bed.
I stuck out my tongue at her and started putting my make-up on. "She's right you know." Opal and Mo commented at the same time. Monica, or Mo, has a brown bob, warm brown eyes, and red glasses. She was wearing an ugly Doll Tee, caprice, and red converse.
As for Opal, she has short, choppy, gold, strawberry-blonde hair and warm orange eyes. Today, she was wearing a purple tee with a skull on it, black jeans, and purple converse.
I finished my make-up and put my hands on my hips. "Well then, you guys can just walk to school." I said.
"No!" They all yelled together. Ha-ha. You know who really hasn't said anything yet, Zeke. Well that's him for ya. He reminds me of this guy I read in a book. He has blond hair that falls right into his beautiful sea blue eyes. Sometimes, he flips his head to get his bangs out of his eyes. He was wearing an OU T-shirt (his favorite college), his favorite ripped jeans, and black hi-tops.
"Well then, we better get going." I stated when I finished brushing my hair and teeth. We ran downstairs and I smiled down at Ash. I just know this day is going to be unforgettable.
